Practice Description
Gene M. Burd is the Managing Director of the firm’s Kyiv, Ukraine Office. He is a native of the Ukraine and is fluent in Russian and English as well as understands Ukrainian.

For over 10 years, Gene has advised international and domestic companies on various aspects of doing business in the former Soviet Union. Gene also represented client in major international commercial litigations and arbitrations involving multimillion dollar contractual and fraud claims. His arbitration experience includes representations in arbitrations under the rules of the American Arbitration Association, International Chamber of Commerce, London Court of International Arbitration, and London Maritime Arbitration Association.

Mr. Burd served as an Adjunct Professor at the Rutgers School of Law in Camden, New Jersey where he taught a course in International Litigations. He is a past trustee of the Voorhees Environmental and Cultural Education Foundation. Mr. Burd has also served as a counsel for US-Russian Exchange an organization dedicated to developing business ties between Russian and the United States of America. Mr. Burd is a past co-chair of the International Law Committee of the Philadelphia Bar Association. He also represents the firm at the Board of Directors of the U.S.-Ukraine Business Council, an organization dedicated to the development of business links between the United States and Ukraine.

A graduate of Rutgers Law School, Mr. Burd also holds a Certificate in International Legal Studies from Salzburg University in Austria. He is admitted to the Bars of Pennsylvania and New Jersey and to the United States Federal District Courts of New Jersey and the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
Representative Engagements
  • Participated in the international legal team successfully representing Tamir Sapir’s company Joy-Lud in the enforcement of the Stockholm arbitration award in the High Arbitrazh Court of the Russian Federation.
  • The successful defense of a U.S. company against a $1.5 million contract claim by a Russian company in the ICC arbitration in Geneva Switzerland.
  • The successful defense of an international commodity trader against a contract claim made by a Swiss company in LMAA arbitration in London.
  • Advice to a real estate investor regarding acquisition of a commercial real estate in St. Petersburg, Russia.
  • Advice to an international ferro-alloy and steel manufacturer in the acquisition of a ferro-alloy plant in the United States through bankruptcy sale.
  • Advice to an international ferro-alloy and steel manufacturer in the acquisition of a cold rolling facility in the United States through a receivership sale.
