Practice Description
For the last 10 years, Maria Grechishkina has advised US and foreign clients on Russian law, corporate finance, litigation and arbitration matters. Her clients include oil and metallurgical businesses, banks and telecommunication companies.

Prior to joining Marks & Sokolov in 1998, Maria served as in-house counsel for Nestle Food – corporate headquarters of the major European food producer - where she worked on the company’s mergers and acquisitions in Russia. From 2003-2004, she headed up the contracting department of VimpеlCom, a major telecommunications company in Russia and Kazakhstan. While there, Maria oversaw the company’s transactional and licensing work, as well as corporate finance maters. Maria negotiated multimillion dollar financings in foreign and domestic markets.

In 1993, Maria graduated from the Moscow State Linguistic University, with degrees in English and French. In 1998, she graduated from the School of Law at the Moscow State University named after M.V Lomonosov. In 2000, she received an LLM from Temple University School of Law.

Maria is qualified to practice Russian law and is admitted to the Bar of New York. She is fluent in Russian, English and French.
Recent Representations
  • Represented plaintiff shareholders in a dispute over the management of the world’s largest ferroalloy plant. The action was filed to vindicate the rights of good-faith investors who suffered damages exceeding hundreds of millions of dollars. The dispute was settled.
  • Represented plaintiff Archangel Diamond Corporation in a case brought in Colorado with clams in excess of $3.6 billion against Russia's largest oil company for wrongdoing related to the denial of rights to develop one of the world's richest diamond fields. The Supreme Court of Colorado reversed the district court’s dismissal of the case for lack of personal jurisdiction stating that the district court had to resolve any conflicting issues of jurisdictional fact in favor of ADC, or hold an evidentiary hearing,-- and that ADC had made a prima facie showing of jurisdiction. The case is now proceeding in Colorado state court.
  • Represented a Canadian company in a dispute over Russian oil assets. The appellate court granted client’s appeal of the dismissal of the case on the grounds of forum non conveniens.
  • Represented shareholders plaintiffs in a suit filed in Delaware in excess of $1 billion related to the illegal seizure of a Russian vanadium plant and a plaintiffs in $2.7 billion suit in New York on behalf of the foreign trading partners of a Russian aluminum factory whose contracts were abrogated in sham bankruptcy proceedings.
  • Preparation of expert opinions on Russian law submitted to US court and various international arbitrations and served as expert on Russian law issues before US courts.
